Raymond Chandler was born in Chicago in 1888 and educated at Dulwich College in England. Described by Evelyn Waugh as ‘the best writer in America’, his legacy to the genre of detective fiction is practically unrivalled. The Big Sleep, Farewell, My Lovely, The Lady in the Lake, The Little Sister and The Long Good-bye are his most enduring novels. He also wrote much short fiction — four gripping novellas are collected together in Trouble is My Business.
He died in California in 1959.
